The AY chip, also called SSG or PSG ([Programmable sound generator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmable_sound_generator]), is a sound chip able to produce square waveforms and noise.

The Atari ST has the Yamaha [YM2149F https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Instrument_AY-3-8910] chip, like on MSX computers, almost the same used on the Sinclair spectrum ZX 128, the Squale (AY-3-8910) and Amstrad CPC (AY-3-8912).
